The
following response to my answer was received from Dale
Hudson, the Technical Support Editor for the
Performance Automotive Group. He provides added insight.
Mike,
I have
written before and was pleased with the cooperation. We are in allied
fields, so I periodically look at your tech questions to see what the
world is doing. I also gain valuable information in support of our
product lines. In reference to the most recent question regarding
lifting a Cherokee, I can offer some additional thoughts to the
(potential) customer.
None of
the suspension lift manufacturers offer more than four inches of lift in
a kit for the XJ vehicles. In general, this allows the XJ to be at least
moderately street legal. This ignores the potential of running afoul of
various state or provincial statutes. This also ignores the stresses on
steering and driveline components, and sourcing shocks which will be
long enough and soft enough so as not to beat him to death.
Another
aspect of attempting to lift the XJ which the young man may be missing,
is that the XJ is a unibody platform. I can only imagine the stresses
placed on the platform with a tall lift such as the young man envisions.
I believe you will agree that in order to accomplish his dream, the
young man will need several pockets full of cash, a spectacular
fabrication facility and many weeks of time.
