Tech Question - Shock Trouble

Q  - Mike,

I just recently replace the rear springs on my '51 Chevy Fastback with new springs from Eaton.  I had replaced the front springs (Mustang II) with Eaton about 2 years ago.  I need to replace the rear shocks and am having a hard time finding anything - gas or air - that will fit.

Here are some specs:
  • 14..625" ~ 14.75" ride height (on car, loaded, neither extended or compressed)
  • top is stud (3/8")
  • bottom is loop (1/2")
Any ideas / recommendations??   Thanks. - Augie

A -  Augie,

The biggest mistake made when buying shocks for a street rod is buying a shock that "fits".

There are more important things to consider besides "fit". While looking for shocks that meet your measurements I came across several shocks that would fit. All but one were for much larger and heavier vehicles.

The function of a shock is to control the release of the springs' energy. Using a shock for a larger vehicle, say a 2 ton dump truck, may fit but it's valving would be too strong to work with the lighter springs of your '51. Too strong of valving will not allow the shock to do it's job which will result in a stiff ride.

So more important than being the correct length the shock must be designed to work with the vehicle's springs. It is better to relocate the shocks mounting points than to install shocks not designed to work with your vehicle.

Another equally important step in choosing shocks is to buy the best shock you can afford. No other part can so quickly ruin the ride as a poor fitting, incorrect, cheap shock. Many a ride problem is solved just by having the customer change shocks.

Neither Edelbrock nor Carrera offered a shock that will meet your requirements.

However, QA1 offers a shock that can be adapted with the correct upper stud mount that will bolt right into place.

The QA1 is a 12 way adjustable hydraulic shock which allows you to fine tune with the shock on the vehicle.

The QA1's are 149.95 each and the upper stud mount is 24.00 each.

And to keep you matched front and rear, there is a QA1 for the front, also at 149.95 each.
